Important considerations

  • Wildlife encounters (including sea turtles) are unpredictable and cannot be guaranteed.

  • Hikes can cover up to 8 km (5 miles) during both day and night. (Nota: se corrigió la conversión a millas, ya que 8 km equivalen a 5 mi).

  • Depending on the season, weather conditions may include extreme heat, high humidity, and heavy rain.

  • All participants are required to have accident insurance with repatriation coverage for non-residents.

Why It Matters

Playa Grande is a community growing alongside Las Baulas National Marine Park in Guanacaste—a protected area that remains a critical sanctuary for endangered species, including the Eastern Tropical Pacific leatherback turtle, the yellow-naped amazon parrot, and the endemic mangrove hummingbird.

Rapid and uncontrolled coastal development led to the creation of the Playa Grande Conservation Development Association (adeplayagrande.org), which strives to foster a culture of environmental regeneration through community park rangers known as the Blue Brigade (Brigada Azul).

Through citizen science and partnerships with local organizations, you will work side-by-side with community leaders, local rangers, researchers, and fellow volunteers, experiencing hands-on conservation in Costa Rica's North Pacific. Key issues we address include waste management, climate change adaptation, and wildlife coexistence.

  • Coordination & supervision by a marine biologist

  • Bilingual ICT-certified guide assistance (ID: 423-ICT)

  • Introductory presentation and project onboarding

  • All necessary tools and field equipment

  • Internal transport to and from project sites in Playa Grande

  • Direct support to local research and monitoring efforts

  • Government permits and tax handling assistance
